II. शाक्तोपाय
Meaning
चित्तम् = mind, consciousness in its mental aspect
मन्त्रः = mantra
"The mind itself is mantra"
At this stage, mantra is not merely a sound or syllable. The very movement of awareness that leads the mind back to its source is mantra. A purified and focused mind becomes a vehicle of liberation.
Essence:
A mind turned toward its source functions as mantra.

चित्तं मन्त्रः
Cittaṃ mantraḥ
Meaning
प्रयत्नः = effort, conscious exertion
साधकः = the means of accomplishment
"Conscious effort is the means"
Unlike Śāmbhavopāya, where recognition may arise spontaneously, Śāktopāya employs attentive effort. The seeker repeatedly redirects awareness toward its true nature.
Essence:
Steady inner effort advances realization.

प्रयत्नः साधकः
Prayatnaḥ sādhakaḥ
Meaning
विद्या = spiritual knowledge, शरीर = body
सत्ता = reality, existence, मन्त्ररहस्यम् = the secret of mantra
"The secret of mantra is that it is the living embodiment of divine knowledge"
The A mantra is not merely a collection of sacred sounds or syllables. Every mantra possesses a subtle living body (śarīra), composed of divine consciousness (vidyā). The secret of mantra lies in recognizing that it is embodied consciousness. This conscious reality is its true essence, hidden beneath its audible form. When this is realized, the mantra ceases to be a sound repeated by the individual and is revealed as consciousness expressing itself.
Essence:
A mantra is living divine knowledge in the form of sacred sound.

विद्याशरीरसत्ता मन्त्ररहस्यम्
Vidyā-śarīra-sattā mantra-rahasyam
Meaning
गर्भे = in an embryonic state, चित्तविकासः = expansion of consciousness
अविशिष्टविद्या = undifferentiated knowledge, स्वप्नः = dream
"The expansion of consciousness in its embryonic, undifferentiated form is like a dream of knowledge"
Before full recognition dawns, the mind unfolds within a state of undifferentiated awareness, much like an embryo developing within the womb. This unfolding has not yet matured into clear spiritual recognition. As a result, the experiences or knowledge gained are illusory and incomplete, like a dream, where awareness is present but its true nature remains veiled by indistinct perception. This impure knowledge is called "Avisishtha Vidya. " Only through continued practice and meditation is it possible to emerge from this dream-like state and experience pure, awakened, and complete truth.
Essence:
Unfolding mind experiences reality as a dream.

SUTRA 4 OF 10
गर्भे चित्तविकासोऽविशिष्टविद्यास्वप्नः
Garbhe citta-vikāso'viśiṣṭa-vidyā-svapnaḥ
Meaning
विद्यासमुत्थाने = when knowledge arises, स्वाभाविके = naturally
खेचरी = moving in space; transcendent awareness, शिवावस्था = the state of Śiva
"When spiritual knowledge arises naturally, Khecarī, the state of Śiva, is attained"
As recognition matures, awareness naturally transcends limited mental activity and abides freely in its own vastness. This effortless freedom is called Khecarī. In Kashmir Śaivism, Khecarī is the effortless freedom of awareness abiding in the limitless expanse of Consciousness. In this state, the mind is no longer confined by thoughts, senses, or individuality. It rests in its own infinite nature, which is, the state of Śiva.
Essence:
Natural awakening reveals the effortless state of Śiva.
When spiritual knowledge arises naturally, Khecarī, the state of Śiva, is attained

विद्यासमुत्थाने स्वाभाविके खेचरी शिवावस्था
Vidyā-samutthāne svābhāvike khecarī śivāvasthā
Meaning
गुरुः = Guru
उपायः = means, path
"The Guru is the means"
The Guru awakens recognition of one's true nature. Ultimately, the highest Guru is the awakened Consciousness shining through the external teacher.
Essence:
The Guru serves as the bridge to recognition.

गुरुरुपायः
Gururupāyaḥ
Meaning
मातृका = letters, powers of speech, चक्र = wheel, system, सम्बोधः = awakening, realization
"Awakening to the Mātṛkā-cakra"
The Mātṛkā Cakra is the sacred matrix of all letters, sounds, thoughts, and expressions through which Consciousness manifests the universe. Every perception, idea, and spoken word arises from this divine wheel of vibration. Spiritual awakening includes recognizing the Mātṛkā Cakra as the dynamic expression of Consciousness itself. The seeker realizes how language, thought, and concepts arise from Consciousness. Instead of becoming bound by them, one recognizes their divine source.
Essence:
Awakening reveals all sound, thought, and expression as expressions of Śakti.

मातृकाचक्रसम्बोधः
Mātṛkā-cakra-sambodhaḥ
Meaning
शरीरम् = body, हविः = sacrificial offering
"The body is the offering"
The The body is not an obstacle to spiritual realization but the very offering in the inner sacrifice. Every action, perception, and experience of the body is to be surrendered into the fire of awakened Consciousness. This inner yajña is not an external ritual but the continual offering of individuality, attachment, and limitation into the divine Self. Spiritual life is fulfilled when the body and all its activities become sacred offerings, transforming ordinary existence into worship. Spiritual practice is not separate from life; one's very being becomes the sacrifice.
Essence:
Entire embodied existence is offered into the fire of Consciousness

शरीरं हविः
Śarīraṃ haviḥ
Meaning
ज्ञानम् = knowledge, अन्नम् = food
"Knowledge is food"
As food nourishes the body, spiritual knowledge nourishes and sustains awakened awareness. Here, knowledge is not merely intellectual information but spiritual insight that transforms the seeker. By assimilating this knowledge through contemplation and realization, the limitations of ignorance are gradually dissolved, allowing one's true nature to shine forth. At a deeper level, the awakened yogin consumes every experience as knowledge of the Self, recognizing all perceptions as nourishment for the expansion of Consciousness.
Essence:
True knowledge is the nourishment of spiritual awakening.

ज्ञानं अन्नम्
Jñānaṃ annam
Meaning
विद्यासंहारे = when spiritual knowledge subsides
तदुत्थ = arising from that, स्वप्नदर्शनम् = dream-vision
"When knowledge recedes, dream-like perceptions arises"
When the light of spiritual knowledge recedes from immediate awareness, consciousness once again projects the dream-like experience of duality. Although the Self never ceases to shine, the withdrawal of direct recognition allows the mind to perceive separation, limitation, and individuality, much like a dream appears real to the dreamer. Ignorance is not the absence of Consciousness but the obscuration of its direct recognition. As divine knowledge subsides, the dream of worldly experience re-emerges until true awareness is restored.
Essence:
When divine knowledge fades, the dream of duality reappears.
When knowledge recedes, dream-like perceptions arises
