I. शाम्भवोपाय

Meaning
चैतन्यम् (caitanyam) = Consciousness, pure awareness
आत्मा (ātmā) = Self, true nature
"Consciousness is the Self."
The Self is Cit, the universal Consciousness that is Śiva. It is not merely a passive witness but the dynamic source of all manifestation through Śakti.
Ātman is pure consciousness. Body, mind, and world are appearances upon this non-dual reality.
Essence:
Your true nature is pure Consciousness.

चैतन्यमात्मा
Caitanyam ātmā



Meaning
ज्ञानम् (jñānam) = knowledge, cognition
बन्धः (bandhaḥ) = bondage, limitation
"Knowledge is bondage"
This refers to limited, differentiated knowledge that creates the experience of separation from Śiva. Knowledge operating through subject-object duality belongs to ignorance (avidyā). Only Self-knowledge liberates.
Essence:
Limited knowledge obscures non-dual Reality.

ज्ञानं बन्धः
Jñānaṃ bandhaḥ



Meaning
योनि (yoni) = source, womb, origin, वर्गः (vargaḥ) = group, collection
योनिवर्गः (yonivargaḥ) = aggregate of sources or causes
कला (kalā) = limiting power, restricted agency, शरीरम् (śarīram) = body, embodiment
"The aggregate of originating causes constitutes the body of limitation"
The infinite powers of Śiva become contracted through the tattvas (tattvas refers to the 36 principles of manifestation recognized in Kashmir Śaivism, through which the infinite, undivided Consciousness of Śiva appears as the finite universe and the individual person), producing limited individuality. The limitless Self appears limited through Māyā and its conditioning adjuncts (upādhis).
Essence:
The Infinite appears finite through limiting conditions.


The aggregate of originating causes constitutes the body of limitation
SUTRA 3 OF 22
योनिवर्गः कलाशरीरम्
Yonivargaḥ kalāśarīram



Meaning
ज्ञान (jñāna) = knowledge
अधिष्ठानम् (adhiṣṭhānam) = basis, foundation
मातृका (mātṛkā) = letters, matrix of sound and language
"Mātṛkā is the foundation of knowledge"
Language, sound, and conceptual categories generate ordinary cognition and the experience of multiplicity. It transforms the undivided Reality into a world of separate things. Names and forms (nāma-rūpa) create apparent distinctions within the pure consciousness.
Essence:
Concepts divide the One into the many.


Mātṛkā is the foundation of knowledge
SUTRA 4 OF 22
ज्ञानाधिष्ठानं
मातृका
Jñānādhiṣṭhānaṃ mātṛkā



Meaning
उद्यमः (udyamaḥ) = upsurge, sudden awakening
भैरवः (bhairavaḥ) = the Supreme Consciousness
"The spontaneous rise of awareness is Bhairava"
This is one of the most celebrated sūtras of the Śiva Sūtras. In Kashmir Śaivism, Bhairava is the Infinite Consciousness, the transcendent and immanent Śiva. When the coverings of limitation momentarily recede, the radiance of Consciousness reveals itself. The flash of Self-recognition is Bhairava directly revealing Himself.
Essence:
Awakened awareness is the revelation of Reality.

SUTRA 5 OF 22
उद्यमो भैरवः
Udyamo Bhairavaḥ



Meaning
शक्ति (śakti) = divine power
चक्र (cakra) = wheel, totality, सन्धाने (sandhāne) = union with, absorption in
विश्व (viśva) = universe, संहारः (saṃhāraḥ) = dissolution
"Through union with the wheel of Śakti, the universe dissolves"
The apparent multiplicity of the world dissolves into the unity of Consciousness. This sūtra does not speak of the physical destruction of the world. The "universe" (viśva) here means the world as it is experienced through duality: I and you, subject and object, knower and known, self and world. When awareness becomes established in the Śakticakra, the manifold universe loses its apparent separateness and is reabsorbed into its source, Consciousness. This is called viśvasaṃhāra, the dissolution of the universe.
Essence:
Multiplicity resolves into non-duality.

SUTRA 6 OF 22
शक्तिचक्रसन्धाने विश्वसंहारः
Śakticakra-sandhāne viśva-saṃhāraḥ



Meaning
जाग्रत् (jāgrat) = waking, स्वप्न (svapna) = dream, सुषुप्ति (suṣupti) = deep sleep
भेदे (bhede) = through discrimination of, तुर्य (turya) = the Fourth
आभोग (ābhoga) = direct experience, संभवः (saṃbhavaḥ) = arises
"By discerning waking, dream, and deep sleep, the experience of Turya arises"
Recognition of the Consciousness underlying all three states reveals Turya. जाग्रत् (Waking -The external world is perceived through the senses), स्वप्न (Dream- The senses are inactive, yet an internal world appears), सुषुप्ति (Deep Sleep- either external objects nor dream objects appear). Turya means "the Fourth." It is not a fourth state alongside the other three.Rather, it is the ever-present Consciousness that underlies all three. This closely parallels the teaching of the Mandukya Upanishad, where Turīya is the ever-present Self underlying all states.
Essence:
The witness of the three states is the Self.

SUTRA 7 OF 22
जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्तभेदे तुर्याभोगसंभवः
Jāgrat-svapna-suṣupta-bhede turyābhoga-saṃbhavaḥ



Meaning
ज्ञानम् (jñānam) = cognition, knowledge
जाग्रत् (jāgrat) = waking state
"Knowledge is the waking state"
Waking is characterized by cognition directed toward external objects. The waking state is the experience of the gross world, illumined by the witnessing Self.
Essence:
Waking is object-oriented awareness.

ज्ञानं जाग्रत्
Jñānaṃ jāgrat



Meaning
स्वप्नः (svapnaḥ) = dream
विकल्पाः (vikalpāḥ) = imaginations, conceptual constructions
"Dream is conceptual construction"
Dream consists of internally generated mental projections. Dream is not merely what occurs during sleep. It is the realm of mental constructions, imaginations, and conceptual projections. Whether the mind is occupied with external objects or internal fantasies, both states arise within Consciousness. The seeker to recognize the awareness that remains present in both.
Essence:
Dream is the play of mental projection.

स्वप्नो विकल्पाः
Svapno vikalpāḥ



Meaning
अविवेकः (avivekaḥ) = non-discrimination
माया (māyā) = the power of concealment
सौषुप्तम् (sauṣuptam) = deep sleep state
"Non-discrimination is the deep sleep of Māyā"
Deep sleep removes mental activity but not ignorance. Liberation requires discrimination (viveka) and Self-knowledge. The failure to recognize one's identity with Śiva is spiritual sleep.
Essence:
Ignorance persists until the Self is consciously recognized.

अविवेको मायासौषुप्तम्
Aviveko māyā-sauṣuptam



Meaning
त्रितय (tritaya) = the triad (waking, dream, deep sleep)
भोक्ता (bhoktā) = experiencer
वीरेशः (vīreśaḥ) = Lord of heroes; the Supreme Self
"The experiencer of the three states is Vīreśa (the Supreme Self)"
The same Consciousness experiences waking, dream, and deep sleep. That experiencer is Śiva Himself, appearing as the individual. The witness (sākṣin) remains unchanged through all three states
Essence:
The one Consciousness is the experiencer of all states.

SUTRA 11 OF 22
त्रितयभोक्ता वीरेशः
Tritaya-bhoktā vīreśaḥ



Meaning
विस्मयः (vismayaḥ) = wonder, astonishment
योगभूमिका (yogabhūmikā) = stage or ground of Yoga
"Vismayaḥ (wonder) is the foundation of Yoga"
When ordinary mental patterns dissolve, a sacred wonder arises. This openness becomes a gateway to recognition. Wonder arise when the limitations of conceptual thinking are transcended and the vastness of the Self is intuited.
Essence:
Profound wonder opens the door to spiritual realization.

SUTRA 12 OF 22
विस्मयो योगभूमिकाः
Vismayo yogabhūmikāḥ



Meaning
इच्छा = will, desire, शक्तिः = divine power
उमा = Umā, the Goddess, कुमारी = ever-fresh maiden
"Icchā śakti (Will-power ) is Umā (Divine Śakti)"
The fundamental impulse toward manifestation, knowledge, and spiritual awakening is not ordinary desire but the Divine Will (Icchā Śakti) itself, personified as Umā.
Essence:
The deepest movement of will within is the Divine Śakti.

SUTRA 13 OF 22
इच्छा शक्तिरुमा कुमारी
Icchā śaktir umā kumārī



Meaning
दृश्यम् (dṛśyam) = that which is seen
शरीरम् (śarīram) = body
"The seen is the body"
Everything objectified in awareness belongs to the realm of the seen, not the seer. "Body" here extends beyond the physical form. Everything that can be perceived, objectified, or known becomes part of the field of the seen. Whatever is observed is an object to Consciousness. Whatever is perceived is an object (dṛśya) and therefore not the Self, which is the eternal seer.
Essence:
All objects of experience belong to the realm of the seen; Consciousness alone is the seer.

SUTRA 14 OF 22
दृश्यं शरीरम्
Dṛśyaṃ śarīram



Meaning
हृदये (hṛdaye) = in the Heart
चित्तसंघट्टात् (citta-saṅghaṭṭāt) = through the merging of the mind
दृश्य (dṛśya) = the seen, स्वाप (svāpa) = sleep, dissolution
दर्शनम् (darśanam) = perception
"By the merging of the mind in the Heart, the dissolution of the seen is perceived"
When the mind returns to its source, the apparent independence of objects disappears into Consciousness.
Essence:
Absorption in the Heart reveals the source of all appearances.

SUTRA 15 OF 22
हृदये चित्तसंघट्टाद् दृश्यस्वापदर्शनम्
Hṛdaye citta-saṅghaṭṭād dṛśya-svāpa-darśanam



Meaning
शुद्धतत्त्व (śuddhatattva) = pure Reality
सन्धानात् (sandhānāt) = through contemplation or union
वा (vā) = alternatively
अपशुशक्तिः (apaśuśaktiḥ) = transcendence of the bound condition
"Or, through union with the pure Reality, one transcends the limitation"
By fixing awareness on the pure, non-dual Self, the contracted identity of the individual dissolves and higher spiritual power emerges.
Essence:
Contemplation of pure Reality frees one from limitation.

SUTRA 16 OF 22
शुद्धतत्त्वसन्धानाद् वा अपशुशक्तिः
Śuddhatattva-sandhānād vā apaśuśaktiḥ



Meaning
वितर्कः (vitarkaḥ) = inquiry, penetrating reflection
आत्मज्ञानम् (ātmajñānam) = Self-knowledge
"Inquiry is Self-knowledge"
Deep inquiry traces thoughts and perceptions back to their source in Consciousness. This resembles ātma-vicāra (Self-inquiry), by which the seeker discovers the true Self beyond all objects. This is not ordinary reasoning. It is direct investigation into the nature of the experiencer, leading thought back to its source in Consciousness.
Essence:
True inquiry culminates in Self-recognition.


Inquiry is Self-knowledge.
SUTRA 17 OF 22
वितर्क आत्मज्ञानम्
Vitarka ātmajñānam



Meaning
लोकानन्दः = bliss of the world
समाधिसुखम् = the happiness of samādhi
"The bliss of the world is the bliss of samādhi"
For one established in recognition, the world is no longer a distraction from samādhi. The same Consciousness shines everywhere, making worldly experience itself an expression of divine bliss. He remains inwardly established in the same peace amidst all experiences.
Essence:
The realized yogin finds the bliss of samādhi permeating the world.

SUTRA 18 OF 22
लोकानन्दः समाधिसुखम्
Lokānandaḥ samādhisukham



Meaning
शक्ति = divine energy, सन्धाने = through union with
शरीर = body, उत्पत्तिः = arising, manifestation
"Through union with Śakti, the body arises"
The body and all embodied experience are manifestations of Śakti. By realizing the source-energy, one understands the body as a direct expression of Consciousness rather than a separate entity.
Essence:
The body is a manifestation of Divine Energy.

SUTRA 19 OF 22
शक्तिसन्धाने शरीरोत्पत्तिः
Śakti-sandhāne śarīrotpattiḥ



Meaning
भूत = elements, सन्धान = union, integration
पृथक्त्व = separateness, विश्व = universe
संघट्टाः = interactions, manifestations, integrations
"From integration of the elements arise their separateness and the structure of the universe"
The universe emerges through the interplay of the fundamental elements. Though they appear distinct and produce multiplicity, they remain expressions of a single underlying Consciousness.
Essence:
The many forms of the universe arise from the dynamic interplay of the one Reality.

SUTRA 20 OF 22
भूतसन्धान
भूतपृथक्त्व विश्वसंघट्टाः
Bhūta-sandhāna bhūta-pṛthaktva viśva-saṅghaṭṭāḥ



Meaning
द्य्/द्योदयात् (dyodayāt) = from the arising of divine light, illumination, awakened consciousness, चक्रेशत्व (cakreśatva) = lordship over the cakras (circles of energies/powers), सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) = attainment, accomplishment
"From the arising of pure knowledge comes the attainment of mastery over the cakras"
When Śuddha Vidyā (pure non-dual knowledge) dawns, one is no longer controlled by the various energies, senses, thoughts, and psychological forces that previously governed him, one becomes their conscious master. Mastery comes through freedom from identification, not through control as an individual ego. The sūtra points to spiritual sovereignty.
Essence:
Awakened consciousness brings mastery over the forces that previously governed the individual.


From the arising of pure knowledge comes the attainment of mastery over the cakras
SUTRA 21 OF 22
द्योदयाच्चक्रेशत्वसिद्धिः
Dyodayāc cakreśatva-siddhiḥ



Meaning
महा (mahā) = great, ह्रद (hrada) = deep reservoir, unfathomable depth
महाह्रद (mahāhrada) = the great inner reservoir of Consciousness
अनुसन्धानात् (anusandhānāt) = through contemplation, continuous awareness,
मन्त्र (mantra) = sacred vibration, revealed sound, वीर्य (vīrya) = power, potency
अनुभवः (anubhavaḥ) = direct experience
"Through contemplation of the Great Reservoir, the power of mantra is directly experienced"
The Mahāhrada is the infinite depth of Consciousness from which all mantras arise. When the seeker turns inward and abides in that source, mantra is no longer experienced as mere sound or repetition. Its living power (vīrya) becomes directly evident because one contacts the very Consciousness that gives mantra its effectiveness.
Essence:
The true power of mantra is revealed when one realizes the Consciousness from which it arises.


Through contemplation of the Great Reservoir, the power of mantra is directly experienced.
