907. Tattvamayī
Tattvamayī reveals the Divine Mother as the one who pervades and manifests as all tattvas, the fundamental principles that constitute the universe. From matter and mind to energy and consciousness, every aspect of existence is an expression of her presence. The name teaches the non-dual vision that the universe is not separate from the Divine Mother but is the living manifestation of her infinite being.

Tattvamayī (तत्त्वमयी)
This is the 907th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Immediately after declaring the Divine Mother as Tattvādhikā, beyond all tattvas, the Sahasranāma presents a complementary truth:
Tattvamayī: She who is constituted of all tattvas; She who pervades all principles of existence; She who appears as the entire fabric of reality.
The juxtaposition is deliberate and profound:
Tattvādhikā: Beyond all tattvas.
Tattvamayī: Present as all tattvas.
This is the simultaneous transcendence and immanence of the Divine Mother.
1. Literal Meaning
Word-by-word
Tattva (तत्त्व)
principle,
reality,
fundamental constituent of existence,
category through which the universe manifests.
Mayī (मयी)
consisting of,
pervaded by,
made of,
manifest as.
Literal translation
"She who is all the tattvas."
or
"She who pervades all principles of existence."
or
"The One appearing as the entire structure of reality."
2. Traditional Meaning
The commentators explain:
The Goddess is called Tattvamayī because all tattvas are her manifestations. The entire universe, from the grossest element to the highest spiritual principle, is pervaded by her presence.
Nothing exists outside her.
3. The Thirty-Six Tattvas
Earlier, under Tattvādhikā, we saw that the tattvas encompass:
the five elements,
the senses,
mind,
intellect,
ego,
Māyā,
Śakti,
Śiva,
and all intermediate levels.
Tattvamayī means:
Every one of these is a manifestation of the Divine Mother.
4. Why Does This Name Follow Tattvādhikā?
The sequence is one of the most elegant in the Sahasranāma.
Tattvādhikā
She transcends all tattvas.
Tattvamayī
She also appears as all tattvas.
The Mother is both:
beyond creation,
and present throughout creation.
Neither statement is complete without the other.
5. Śrīvidyā Meaning
In Śrīvidyā, the universe is not regarded as separate from the Divine.
The tattvas are expressions of Consciousness itself.
The Mother manifests as:
matter,
energy,
mind,
knowledge,
bliss.
Thus she is Tattvamayī.
6. The Universe as Her Body
Many Śākta texts describe the cosmos as the body of the Goddess.
The tattvas become her limbs and powers.
Creation is therefore not external to her.
It is her own manifestation.
7. Devotional Meaning
For devotees, this name transforms perception.
The Mother is present in:
earth,
water,
fire,
air,
space,
every being,
every experience.
The world becomes sacred because it is filled with her presence.
8. The Divine in Everything
Tattvamayī teaches:
Nothing is spiritually insignificant.
Every aspect of existence contains the Divine Mother's reality.
The seeker learns to see her everywhere.
9. Advaita Vedāntic Meaning
Now the deepest layer.
A profound question
How can the Mother be both beyond all tattvas and all tattvas?
The hidden teaching
Because transcendence and immanence belong to the same reality.
The Gold and Ornament Analogy
Many ornaments exist:
rings,
necklaces,
bracelets.
Each has a different form.
All are gold.
Similarly:
The tattvas appear diverse.
Their essence is one Consciousness.
That Consciousness is the Mother.
Beyond Yet Within
The gold is present in every ornament.
Yet gold is not limited to any single ornament.
Likewise:
The Mother pervades all tattvas.
Yet she transcends them.
This is the relationship between Tattvādhikā and Tattvamayī.
The Universe as Consciousness
Ordinarily we perceive:
objects,
people,
events.
The enlightened vision sees:
all are appearances within Consciousness.
Thus all are forms of the Mother.
The Resolution of Duality
If the Mother alone appears as all tattvas,
then the apparent separation between:
Divine and world,
Spirit and matter,
sacred and ordinary,
begins to dissolve.
This is the wisdom of Tattvamayī.
Relation to Earlier Names
Observe the progression:
Baindavāsanā – Seated in the Bindu.
Tattvādhikā – Beyond all tattvas.
Tattvamayī – Present as all tattvas.
The Sahasranāma now reveals the complete non-dual vision of the Divine Mother.
The Non-Dual Meaning
At the highest level, Tattvamayī signifies that Supreme Consciousness itself appearing as every level of existence. All principles, energies, forms, minds, and worlds are expressions of the Divine Mother's own being.
A Deeper Contemplation
The name Tattvamayī is the perfect complement to Tattvādhikā.
The Mother is beyond everything.
The Mother is also everything.
These are not contradictory statements.
They are two perspectives on the same truth.
From a devotional perspective, Tattvamayī is the Mother present in every aspect of life and creation.
From a cosmological perspective, all tattvas are manifestations of her power.
From a Śākta perspective, the universe itself is her living body.
From an Advaitic perspective, all phenomena are appearances of the one Consciousness that is the Divine Mother.
She transcends the tattvas.
She becomes the tattvas.
She remains one.
Ultimately, Tattvamayī teaches that the Divine Mother pervades and constitutes the entirety of existence. Every tattva, from the gross elements to the highest spiritual realities, is an expression of her presence. Through this name, the seeker learns to perceive the universe not as separate from the Divine but as the unfolding manifestation of the Divine Mother's own infinite consciousness.
To contemplate Tattvamayī is to recognize all existence as permeated by and inseparable from the Divine Mother.
One-line Essence
Tattvamayī reveals the Divine Mother as the essence and substance of all tattvas and all existence.
