87. Śakti-kūṭaika-tāpanna-kaṭy-adho-bhāga-dhāriṇī

Śakti-kūṭaika-tāpanna-kaṭy-adho-bhāga-dhāriṇī reveals the Divine Mother as the creative power through which Consciousness expresses itself as the universe. The name teaches that manifestation is not separate from the Absolute but the natural flowering of Awareness and Bliss into the countless forms of existence.

Śakti-kūṭaika-tāpanna-kaṭy-adho-bhāga-dhāriṇī (शक्तिकूटैकतापन्नकट्यधोभागधारिणी)

This is the 87th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.

Having revealed the Divine Mother's face as the Vāgbhava Kūṭa and Her torso as the Madhya (Kāmarāja) Kūṭa, the Sahasranāma now completes the revelation of the Pañcadaśākṣarī Mantra as Her very body.

The third and final section - the Śakti Kūṭa - is identified with the region below Her waist.

Thus the entire Divine Form is revealed as the living embodiment of the Śrīvidyā Mantra.

1. Literal Meaning

Word-by-word

Śakti-kūṭa – the third section of the Pañcadaśākṣarī Mantra

Eka – alone, exclusively

Āpanna – become, assumed, identified with

Kaṭi-adho-bhāga – the region below the waist

Dhāriṇī – bearing, possessing, embodying

Literal translation

"She whose region below the waist is exclusively the form of the Śakti Kūṭa."

or

"She who embodies the Śakti Kūṭa as the portion of Her form below the waist."

2. Traditional Meaning

The three kūṭas of the Pañcadaśākṣarī are:

Vāgbhava Kūṭa

ka e ī la hrīṁ

Kāmarāja (Madhya) Kūṭa

ha sa ka ha la hrīṁ

Śakti Kūṭa

sa ka la hrīṁ

In traditional Śrīvidyā contemplation:

  • Head and face → Vāgbhava Kūṭa

  • Neck to waist → Kāmarāja Kūṭa

  • Waist downward → Śakti Kūṭa

This name completes the identification of the Divine Mother with the sacred mantra.

3. Devotional Meaning

The lower portion of the Divine Form symbolizes:

  • support,

  • grounding,

  • movement,

  • manifestation,

  • nourishment of the worlds.

The name teaches:

The Divine Mother's power is not only transcendent wisdom and bliss, but also the force through which existence is sustained and expressed.

Nothing in creation lies outside Her presence.

4. Śrīvidyā Meaning

The Śakti Kūṭa represents:

  • manifestation,

  • creative energy,

  • dynamic expression,

  • the power through which the unmanifest becomes manifest.

If the first kūṭa symbolizes knowledge,

and the second bliss,

the third symbolizes:

active power.

It is the movement of Consciousness appearing as creation.

5. Advaita Vedāntic Meaning

Now the deeper layer.

Why the region below the waist?

Symbolically, this is the region associated with:

  • movement,

  • action,

  • manifestation,

  • engagement with the world.

Thus the Śakti Kūṭa represents the outward expression of the Reality already revealed in the first two kūṭas.

What is Śakti here?

At the highest level, Śakti is not separate from Consciousness.

It is Consciousness in expression.

Just as:

  • light cannot be separated from the sun,

  • heat cannot be separated from fire,

Śakti cannot be separated from Awareness.

The universe itself is Śakti.

Why is this the final kūṭa?

The progression of the mantra mirrors the unfolding of Reality:

Vāgbhava Kūṭa

The source of knowledge and revelation.

Kāmarāja Kūṭa

The fullness of bliss and divine love.

Śakti Kūṭa

The expression of that fullness as creation.

Thus the entire cosmos emerges from:

Awareness → Bliss → Manifestation

The hidden teaching

The three kūṭas are not three separate realities.

They are three perspectives on one Reality.

  • Consciousness knows.

  • Consciousness delights.

  • Consciousness manifests.

The Divine Mother is all three simultaneously.

A deeper contemplation

The Sahasranāma has now revealed the Pañcadaśākṣarī not merely as a mantra to be recited, but as a living map of existence.

The mantra is Her body.

Her body is the universe.

The universe is Consciousness in expression.

Thus the Śakti Kūṭa teaches that manifestation is not separate from the Absolute.

The world is not outside Reality.

It is Reality appearing as form.

One-line Essence

Śakti-kūṭaika-tāpanna-kaṭy-adho-bhāga-dhāriṇī reveals the dynamic power of Consciousness through which the fullness of Awareness and Bliss flowers into manifestation, showing the universe itself to be the living expression of the one Reality.
