53. Śivā
Śivā reveals the Divine Mother as the very essence of auspiciousness and the Supreme Reality itself, not separate from Śiva but identical with Him in essence. The name points beyond all dualities to the one self-luminous Consciousness that appears as both stillness and power, transcending every distinction.
Śivā (शिवा)
This is the 53rd name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Immediately after revealing the Divine Mother as Śiva-kāmeśvarāṅkasthā- seated on the lap of Kāmeśvara- the Sahasranāma declares something even more profound:
She is Śivā.
The distinction between Śiva and Śakti now begins to dissolve.
1. Literal Meaning
Word-by-word
Śivā – the feminine form of Śiva
The word Śiva comes from the root meaning:
auspicious
benevolent
blessed
conducive to welfare
that which brings ultimate good
Literal translation
"She who is auspicious."
or
"She who is the embodiment of all auspiciousness and blessedness."
2. Traditional Meaning
In its devotional sense, Śivā means:
The Auspicious Mother.
She is the source of:

All auspiciousness in the universe proceeds from Her.
3. Why is She called Śivā?
The previous name spoke of Her relationship with Śiva.
This name goes further.
It does not say:
"Beloved of Śiva"

"Consort of Śiva"
It simply says:

This indicates identity rather than relationship.
4. Śrīvidyā Meaning
In Śrīvidyā, Śiva and Śakti are not separate entities.
They are two aspects of one Reality.

The name teaches:
The Mother is not merely associated with Śiva.
She is the very essence of Śiva.

Now the deepest layer.
What is Śiva?
At the highest level, Śiva is not a deity among deities.
Śiva signifies:
Pure Being-Consciousness-Bliss.
The Absolute Reality itself.
Then why is Lalitā called Śivā?
Because the Sahasranāma is revealing that:
The Supreme Reality cannot be divided into separate masculine and feminine principles.
These distinctions belong to symbolism.
The essence is one.

She is united with Śiva.

worshipper and worshipped,
devotee and deity,
Śiva and Śakti.
As understanding deepens, these distinctions soften.
Finally one realizes:
The Reality sought has always been One.
The name Śivā is a direct pointer to that realization.

The inseparable union of Consciousness and Śakti.

The revelation that they are not merely united - they are one.
