215. Mahāmāyā
Mahāmāyā reveals the Divine Mother as the Great Power of manifestation through which the infinite Consciousness appears as the universe of forms and experiences. The name teaches that the world is neither separate from nor independent of the Divine, but a sacred expression of Consciousness that becomes a means of awakening when its deeper nature is understood.
Mahāmāyā (महामाया)
This is the 215th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Having revealed the Divine Mother as Mahāpātaka-nāśinī, the destroyer of the deepest ignorance and bondage, the Sahasranāma now presents a profound paradox:
Mahāmāyā — The Great Māyā; She who projects the universe, veils Reality, and simultaneously reveals Reality.
The very Mother who removes ignorance is also the power through which the universe appears. This is one of the most subtle and profound teachings of the Sahasranāma.

2. Traditional Meaning
In the scriptures, Māyā is the mysterious power through which the One appears as many.
Through Māyā:
the unchanging appears as changing,
the infinite appears as finite,
the non-dual appears as a universe of multiplicity.
The Divine Mother is called Mahāmāyā because this cosmic power belongs to Her.
She creates, sustains, and withdraws the universe through Māyā.
3. Devotional Meaning
For a devotee, Mahāmāyā is the Divine Mother's wondrous play.
She manifests:
worlds,
beings,
relationships,
experiences,

Rather, it means that the world does not exist independently of Consciousness.

Why is it called Mahāmāyā?

Mahāpātaka-nāśinī
Destroyer of ignorance.

Mahāmāyā

Is this a contradiction?

The Mother both veils and unveils.

Without Māyā there would be:
no universe,
no experience,
no devotion,
no seeking,
no spiritual journey.

Thus both bondage and liberation unfold through Her power.

The universe is not an accident.
It is a divine expression.
The problem is not appearance itself.
The problem is mistaking appearance for the whole truth.
When appearance is understood as the play of Consciousness, Māyā becomes a doorway to wisdom rather than a source of bondage.

They identify with:

status,
possessions,
personal history.
These are real at their own level, yet none constitute the deepest truth.
