160. Niścintā
Niścintā reveals the Divine Mother as the embodiment of perfect freedom from worry and anxiety. The name teaches that true peace arises not from controlling circumstances but from recognizing the complete and unchanging nature of Consciousness, which remains forever untouched by uncertainty, loss, and fear.

Niścintā (निश्चिन्ता)
This is the 160th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Having revealed the Divine Mother as Madanāśinī, the destroyer of pride and egoic intoxication, the Sahasranāma now reveals the state that naturally follows the dissolution of ego:
Niścintā — She who is free from all worry, anxiety, and concern.
Worry arises from a sense of limitation, uncertainty, and dependence. The Divine Mother, being complete, infinite, and self-existent, has nothing to fear, protect, attain, or lose. Therefore She abides in perfect freedom from all anxiety.
1. Literal Meaning
Word-by-word
Niṣ / Nis – without, free from
Cintā – worry, anxiety, concern, mental agitation, anxious thought
Literal translation
"She who is free from worry."
or
"She who is untouched by anxiety and mental concern."
2. Traditional Meaning
The Divine Mother is called Niścintā because She is:
all-knowing,
all-pervading,
complete,
self-sufficient.
Nothing unforeseen can arise for Her.
Nothing can threaten Her.
Nothing can diminish Her.
Thus worry has no place in Her nature.
3. Devotional Meaning
For a devotee, this name is deeply comforting.
The Mother is never overwhelmed by the complexities of the universe.
What appears impossible to the individual is effortlessly contained within Her wisdom.
Meditating on Niścintā inspires trust:
The Divine order is greater than individual fear.
The devotee gradually learns to place burdens at Her feet and rest in faith.
4. Śrīvidyā Meaning
In Śrīvidyā, anxiety arises from identification with the limited self.
The Divine Mother is beyond all limitation.
As Niścintā, She represents:
The natural ease of Consciousness resting in its own completeness.
The universe may appear as a dynamic play, but the underlying Reality remains perfectly undisturbed.
5. Advaita Vedāntic Meaning
Now the deeper layer.
What is worry?
Worry is the mind's attempt to secure an uncertain future.
It is rooted in assumptions such as:
"Something essential may be lost."
"Something necessary is missing."
"My well-being depends upon circumstances."
Thus worry is inseparable from the sense of incompleteness.
Why is Consciousness free from worry?
Because Consciousness lacks nothing.
It does not depend upon outcomes.
It is not threatened by change.
It is not waiting for fulfillment.
Being complete, it has no reason for anxiety.
The connection with the previous names
Observe the beautiful sequence:
Nīrāgā — free from attachment
Rāga-mathanī — destroyer of attachment
Nirmadā — free from pride
Madanāśinī — destroyer of pride
Niścintā — free from worry
The Sahasranāma is revealing a subtle truth:
Attachment creates pride.
Pride creates vulnerability.
Vulnerability creates anxiety.
When the root illusion dissolves, worry disappears.
Is freedom from worry indifference?
No.
Indifference arises from lack of care.
Niścintā arises from fullness and wisdom.
The Divine Mother cares infinitely, yet worries about nothing.
She acts perfectly without anxiety because Her actions arise from completeness rather than fear.
A deeper contemplation
Most worries concern things that are uncertain, changing, or beyond complete control.
The mind attempts to secure permanence in an impermanent world.
This effort itself becomes suffering.
The Divine Mother as Niścintā reveals another possibility.
Peace does not come from controlling every outcome.
Peace comes from recognizing the unchanging Reality that underlies every outcome.
When the seeker begins to rest in that Reality, worry gradually gives way to trust, agitation to stillness, and fear to quiet confidence.
The mind may continue to plan and act, but the heart is no longer burdened by anxiety.
One-line Essence
Niścintā reveals the effortless peace of Consciousness, which, being complete and self-existent, remains forever free from anxiety, fear, and concern about the changing movements of life.
