154. Nirupādhiḥ
Nirupādhiḥ reveals the Divine Mother as the unconditioned and limitless Reality beyond all identities, forms, and limitations. The name teaches that while Consciousness may appear restricted by body, mind, and individuality, its true nature remains eternally free, infinite, and untouched by every conditioning factor.
Nirupādhiḥ (निरुपाधिः)
This is the 154th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Having revealed the Divine Mother as Niṣkalaṅkā, the immaculate and blemishless Reality, the Sahasranāma now removes one of the final veils that obscures the Absolute:
Nirupādhiḥ — She who is without limiting adjuncts; She who is free from all conditioning.
This is one of the most profound Advaitic names in the Sahasranāma. It points directly to the pure, unconditioned nature of Consciousness that remains untouched by every identity, role, attribute, and limitation.

In Vedānta, an upādhi is something that makes the unlimited appear limited.
Classic examples include:
the body,

the ego,
name and form.
Though the Self is infinite, it appears limited when identified with these adjuncts.
The Divine Mother is called Nirupādhiḥ because no such limitation truly applies to Her.
3. Devotional Meaning
For a devotee, this name reveals:
The Mother cannot be confined by any description.
She is not limited by:
form,
gender,
deity,
world,
concept,
doctrine.
Every sacred form reveals Her, yet no form contains Her.
Every name points to Her, yet no name exhausts Her.

In Śrīvidyā, the Divine Mother manifests as:

Yet these are expressions, not limitations.

What is an Upādhi?
An upādhi is not a real limitation.
It is an apparent limitation.
A classic example:
Space inside a pot appears different from space outside the pot.
The pot acts as an upādhi.
When the pot breaks, it becomes obvious that the space was never truly divided.
Similarly, Consciousness appears limited by:
body,
personality,
memory,
individuality.
But these are merely upādhis.
How does bondage arise?
The infinite Self says:
"I am this body."
"I am this mind."
"I am this story."
This identification creates the appearance of limitation.
The limitation belongs to the upādhi, not to Consciousness.
Why is the Divine Mother Nirupādhiḥ?
Because She is never truly confined by any appearance.
Though She appears as:
the individual,
the world,
the gods,
the elements,
She remains the limitless Reality beyond all these designations.
The great insight
When the wave identifies itself as a wave, it feels small.
When it recognizes itself as water, limitation disappears.
Similarly, when Consciousness identifies with upādhis, bondage appears.
When it recognizes its true nature, freedom is evident.
This freedom is Nirupādhiḥ.
The hidden teaching
The previous name:
Niṣkalaṅkā
The Divine is spotless and free from blemish.
This name:
Nirupādhiḥ
The Divine is free even from the apparent limitations that create the illusion of blemish or individuality.
The progression is profound:
Reality is flawless.
Reality is also completely unconditioned.
A deeper contemplation
Most human suffering arises from mistaken identity.
One identifies with:
age,
success,
failure,
social roles,
personal history.
These become upādhis.
Yet none of them define the essence of one's being.
The Divine Mother as Nirupādhiḥ reveals the pure Consciousness that exists prior to every identity.
Before the body was named,
before the personality formed,
before any story was told,
Awareness already was.
It remains exactly the same now.
To recognize this is to discover a freedom beyond all labels, roles, and conditions—the freedom of the unconditioned Self.
