147. Nirāśrayā
Nirāśrayā reveals the Divine Mother as the self-existent Reality that depends upon nothing while supporting all that exists. The name teaches that beneath the changing world lies an utterly independent Consciousness whose being is not borrowed from any condition, cause, or support, but shines eternally by its own nature.
Nirāśrayā (निराश्रया)
This is the 147th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Having revealed the Divine Mother as Niṣprapañcā, beyond the entire realm of manifestation and multiplicity, the Sahasranāma now reveals the absolute independence of that Reality:
Nirāśrayā - She who has no dependence, support, or resting place outside Herself.
Everything in existence relies upon something else. The Divine Mother alone exists by Her own nature, requiring no external support while serving as the support of all.
1. Literal Meaning

Āśraya – refuge, support, dependence, resting place, foundation
Literal translation
"She who is without dependence."
or
"She who has no support outside Herself."
2. Traditional Meaning
All things in creation depend upon causes and conditions:
the body depends on food,
the mind depends on impressions,
objects depend on material causes,
worlds depend on cosmic laws.
The Divine Mother as Nirāśrayā depends on nothing.
She is the ultimate Reality upon which everything rests, while She herself rests upon none.
3. Devotional Meaning
For a devotee, this name reveals:
The Divine Mother as the unfailing refuge.
Everything else may change or disappear.
Yet the Mother remains eternal and self-existent.
She is the support of all beings because Her existence is not contingent upon anything else.
4. Śrīvidyā Meaning
In Śrīvidyā, all manifestations arise from the Divine Mother:
mantras,
deities,
worlds,
energies,
experiences.
Yet none of these sustain Her.
Rather, they are sustained by Her.
Thus Nirāśrayā signifies:
The Supreme Reality that is self-established and absolutely independent.
5. Advaita Vedāntic Meaning
Now the deeper layer.
What is an āśraya?
An āśraya is that upon which something depends for its existence.
Every object of experience requires:
a cause,
a condition,
a context,
a support.
Nothing in the phenomenal world stands entirely on its own.
Why is Consciousness Nirāśrayā?
Because every support is itself known within Awareness.
Any object that could serve as a support appears within Consciousness.
Therefore Consciousness cannot depend upon what depends upon it.
It is self-revealing and self-established.
How is this different from Nirādhārā?
Earlier, Nirādhārā (Name 132) revealed that the Divine has no foundation beneath Her.
Nirāśrayā deepens the teaching:
Not only does She have no foundation beneath Her,
She has no dependence of any kind whatsoever.
The emphasis here is absolute self-sufficiency.
What does this reveal about the Self?
The seeker ordinarily feels dependent upon circumstances for peace and fulfillment.
Yet the deepest nature of Consciousness depends on nothing external.
It shines by itself.
Its existence is self-evident.
Its reality is not borrowed.
The hidden teaching
The previous name:
Niṣprapañcā
The Divine transcends the entire realm of manifestation.
This name:
Nirāśrayā
The Divine is utterly independent of everything that appears within that realm.
The progression is profound:
Reality is beyond the world.
Reality is dependent upon nothing whatsoever.
A deeper contemplation
The human mind constantly seeks supports:
beliefs,
possessions,
relationships,
achievements,
identities.
While useful within life, none can provide absolute security because all are subject to change.
The Divine Mother as Nirāśrayā points toward a deeper truth.
At the heart of existence is a Reality that does not borrow its being from anything else.
It simply is.
When the seeker recognizes this self-existent Consciousness as their own deepest nature, a profound freedom dawns.
One no longer seeks ultimate stability in the changing, because the unchanging source has been discovered within.
