139. Nirguṇā
Nirguṇā reveals the Divine Mother as the Absolute Reality beyond all qualities, forms, and definitions. The name teaches that while all divine attributes arise within Consciousness, its true nature remains infinitely beyond every category of thought, shining as the limitless ground of all existence.
Nirguṇā (निर्गुणा)
This is the 139th name of the Lalitā Sahasranāma.
Having revealed the Divine Mother as Nirākulā, the undisturbed and ever-serene Reality, the Sahasranāma now unveils one of the most profound declarations of Advaita:
Nirguṇā - She who is beyond all qualities and attributes.
This name takes the seeker beyond every conceptual description of the Divine. Whatever can be thought, imagined, classified, or defined belongs to the realm of qualities. The Supreme Reality transcends them all.
1. Literal Meaning

Guṇa – quality, attribute, characteristic; also the three guṇas—sattva, rajas, and tamas

"She who is without qualities."

2. Traditional Meaning
In Hindu philosophy, all manifestation operates through the three guṇas:
Sattva – harmony, clarity, illumination
Rajas – activity, passion, movement
Tamas – inertia, concealment, stability
Everything in creation is influenced by these three.
The Divine Mother as Nirguṇā transcends them entirely.
She is not bound by the laws governing manifestation.
3. Devotional Meaning
For a devotee, this name teaches that the Mother cannot be fully contained within any image or concept.

5. Advaita Vedāntic Meaning

What is a quality?
A quality is something that distinguishes one thing from another.
For example:
large or small,
bright or dark,
peaceful or active,
beautiful or ordinary.
Every quality implies limitation.
To possess one characteristic is to exclude another.
Why must the Absolute be beyond qualities?
Because the Infinite cannot be limited by any definition.
If Reality possessed a specific quality, it could be contrasted with something else.
But the Absolute has no second thing outside itself.
Therefore it cannot be confined by any attribute.
Does Nirguṇā mean empty or lifeless?
Not at all.
This is one of the most misunderstood teachings.
Nirguṇā does not mean absence.
It means:
Beyond all conceptual categories.
Consciousness is not a quality among qualities.
It is the very reality in which all qualities appear.
What about divine qualities such as love and compassion?
These are sacred manifestations of the Divine within the realm of experience.
Yet the Reality underlying them cannot be reduced even to these exalted attributes.
The ocean is not limited to any single wave.
Similarly, the Divine is not limited to any particular expression.

Reality is undisturbed.
Reality is beyond every conceivable description.

Every answer, however beautiful, remains partial.
Nirguṇā invites the seeker beyond all descriptions into direct recognition.
The Divine Mother is not merely peaceful, loving, radiant, or wise.
She is the boundless Consciousness in which peace, love, radiance, wisdom, and all other qualities arise.
To know Her as Nirguṇā is to discover a Reality that can never be confined by thought, yet is more intimate than any experience.
